Modern Warfare 2: Everything You Need To Know

Beta-Release

The Modern Warfare 2 beta will start September 16, 2022. As usual, PlayStation players will once again get access to the beta a full week earlier and people who pre-ordered will be able to start another two days earlier. Here are all the dates for the Modern Warfare 2 beta:

Platform Early Access
Open Beta
PlayStation only September 16-17, 2022 September 18-20, 2022
Cross-Play (all platforms) September 22-23, 2022 September 24-26, 2022

Editions

MWII will be available in three different editions. All editions are already available for pre-order and partly contain cosmetics that can already be used in Warzone.

  • Standard Edition
  • Cross Gen Bundle
  • Vault Edition

The first two editions are self-explanatory, but the Vault Edition is the ultimate version of MWII. Besides the game, it also includes the Battle Pass with 50 tier skips, early access to the beta and a lot of exclusive cosmetics.

New Features

One of the most important new features might be that Call of Duty is back on Steam with Modern Warfare 2. After the franchise moved to Battle.net with Modern Warfare 2019, Call of Duty will also be back on Steam with Modern Warfare II.

Of course, the game will also get a new IW9 engine and will also be released with FOV slider (Field of View) for consoles. Even if this may mean nothing to some, this is a feature that many console gamers wish for every year.

New Movement Features

Besides these new features, there will also be some new movement features. For example, we can mantle and hang from ledges etc. in MWII. Swimming and diving will also be possible again. Additionally, the Tac Sprint will be back, but we can’t shoot while sliding. However, the beloved Dolphin Dive will return.

We can finally go swimming again. We can even fight in and underwater or drive vehicles in or on it. Sounds very exciting. Hanging from ledges also offers exciting new possibilities, as we can use our sidearm while hanging from ledges. This offers much more tactical depth and could lead to a nasty surprise or two.

Release Date

Modern Warfare II will be released on October 28, 2022. However, if you decide to pre-order digitally, you can play the campaign as early as October 20. Both Vanguard and Black Ops Cold War were released in early and mid-November, respectively, so MWII will actually hit the market a bit earlier than usual.

Campaign

Of course, Modern Warfare II will come with an action-packed campaign. The campaign will have us fighting against drug cartels in South America and will also bring back some familiar faces from the Modern Warfare franchise. According to leaks, in the campaign we’ll be able to interact with and give instructions to our companions, and will also be able to make decisions that will affect the story.

Here we already have first pictures of the characters that will appear in Modern Warfare II:

Multiplayer

The multiplayer was publicly presented during the Call of Duty Next event, and it actually brings some innovations.

Maps

The multiplayer maps in MWII are supposed to be more “traditional” and stick to the Infinity Ward feeling. In addition, some popular maps from the original MW2 will return as remakes. Also, the Modern Warfare 2019 Maps are supposed to be implemented into Modern Warfare 2 some time after release. Here are all the maps we know about so far:

Weapons

In terms of weapons, we will again get a wide selection of assault rifles, SMGs, LMGs, sniper rifles, shotguns, DMRs, pistols, knives, launchers and melee weapons. If you want to know more, we already have an extra article for you about the weapons and attachments in MWII.

Modern Warfare II’s new Gunsmith in particular will be exciting, in that we’ll return to the usual 5 attachments per weapon, but will have an incredible number of options to customize our favorite guns to our play style. Here we took a closer look at the new system:

As in every CoD, there will, of course, be countless camos that you can use to upgrade your weapons. Exactly how many is not yet known, but we can already guarantee that the grind will be real.

Game Modes

The game modes include all the old familiar ones like Team Deathmatch, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Demolition, Search & Destroy etc., but there will also be some new modes. Besides the modes just mentioned, we also get the Ground War mode with big 32v32 matches, as well as 3v3 modes called Raids, which are designed for very tactical gameplay. With Knockout, Prisoner Rescue and Invasion there are also three new 6v6 modes. Oh, we also get a 3rd-person mode

Perks

Like everything else, the perks for MWII have already been leaked. There will be so-called Perk Packages, each consisting of four perks, two basic perks and one bonus and one ultimate perk. These perks will be unlocked gradually over the course of a match. Kills, objectives, assists and more will speed up the unlocking process. You can find a detailed overview of all perks here:

Field Upgrades

Field Upgrades are also returning in MWII. We will get gadgets like tactical cameras, a decoy mine that triggers a soldier dummy or a DDoS device that will work similar to an EMP. A complete list of all field upgrades known to us so far can be found here:

Killstreaks

As always, killstreaks will be available in MWII because nothing is more awesome than a nice multikill that directly unlocks a chopper gunner. A UAV and a controllable bomb are once again part of the game, and there is also talk of a kind of napalm attack and a stealth bomber. Here we have summarized all the info for you:

Ranked Play

Modern Warfare 2 will also have a Ranked Play mode, which is supposed to be available much earlier this time around. In the past, Ranked Play was often introduced months after release, but according to the latest information, MWII will get its Ranked Play mode shortly after release. Here you can find more info:

SBMM

In order to provide both good and bad players with a pleasant gaming experience, MWII will once again have SBMM or Skill Based Matchmaking. How strict this feature will be this time is not yet known, but there will definitely be a system that matches players with each other based on their skill level. In Vanguard, this worked as follows:

Spec Ops: The Third Mode In MWII

Just like in Modern Warfare 2019 and all previous games in the Modern Warfare series, Spec Ops will once again feature a third co-op mode. Not much is known about this year’s Spec Ops, only that it will be a 2-player mode in which we fight against AI soldiers on large maps.

Note: Keep in mind that some of the above information is based on leaks! Some features mentioned could still change before the release on October 28.
